Billy, thanks for responding to my post about the 1966 NYC transit strike. If you'll recall, it was bitterly cold the entire time of the strike, although there was no snow, the first twelve days of January. I found out that Carey Bus Lines, which was a private bus company, was operating a route from Staten Island, through Brooklyn, and onto JFK Airport. I walked from Avenue H and Westminster Road to Cortelyou Road, and boarded a Carey bus. The fare was relatively inexpensive, maybe $2.00 at the most. We arrived at JFK Airport, about 45 minutes later. There, I boarded a New York Airways helicopter, which flew me into Manhattan, to the top of the Pan American Building (now the Met Life Building). It took exactly seven minutes, and the fare was $7.00, which was a bargain, even in 1966. From there, (the Pan Am Bulding was on top of Grand Central Station), I walked to 23rd St., and Lexington Avenue, to the Bernard M. Baruch College, to take a final exam. It is a good thing that I made it to class, as I found out that the instructor later flunked anybody who didn't take that exam, transit strike or no transit strike. Reference ID: BK97237 |
