From the Marine Park section, as teens we (sisters and friends) hitch-hiked rides to Riis. Nobody had cars except older guys, and sometimes we actually walked the long 4-5 mile trek to and from this beach. No one had the fare for the Green Line bus. Walking without shoes on the way back one time, a burr got embedded in my foot while traversing the scrub brush roundabout. With the waves, sometimes quite huge, we body-surfed before we ever heard of the term. We didn't learn to swim until we managed to get to Gerritsen Beach. It didn't have the waves, but we could float and dog-paddle, the step to swimming. A new term now "rip tide", for us it was the "undertow". Not too far from the shoreline there was an underwater sand bar, that taller people could stand up on when if they swam out to it.
