I remember that - it was so offensive! Today teachers provide the toothbrush, toothpaste, soap and towel and tell the kids to go wash up in the nearest bathroom. During lunch it's hair washing time in the nurses' office. I know because I did it for years.
Then there was the inquiry as to where your parents were born - done like a roll call. I got sent to the principal's office for (rightly!) insisting that my parents had both been born here.
