Brooklyn summers were a nightmare. Living on the top floor with a black tar roof our apartment was stifling, and it never cooled off at night. We used to fill the bathtub with cold water and sit in it. All we had were fans for years, until my parents put an AC unit in their bedroom. We were limited to 1 per apartment because the apartment's electric system supposedly couldn't handle more than that, but I don't remember our unit failing. My grandparent's building across the street was older (they still had sconces for gas lights) and they couldn't have AC at all, as the entire building's electric system would short out.
