At one time, my family had four generations living in Brooklyn. But in the mid-fifties, the exodus to Long Island commenced. (I'm the last family member living in NYC, although in Staten Island.) Apart from the numerous, time-consuming and traffic snarls over the years from visiting our East relatives, my worst experience on the Belt was in the '80s after visiting my uncle Eddie in Deer Park, a long-enough trek from Brookly, but by then I was living in Staten Island, adding another 45-60 minutes to the ride. It was Valentine's Day, but not on Friday or Sunday - and, really that makes no difference on the Belt. On the return trip westward. traffic came to a stand-still, starting at JFK, cars literally crawled to Flatbush Ave where a piece of concrete had fallen from the overpass. Cars stalled, some had even run out of gas, and I kept looking at my gas gauge in fear that I, too, would be stranded - for at least a two-hour snag from JFK to Flatbush Ave. Once I cleared that, I had another hour plus to reach home - altogether a five-hour one-way journey!
