Except for a one-week vacation to Lake George and occasional trips to a family friend's unfinished home on a canal in Shirley, Long Island, every summer was spent at P.S. 222, "summer school". Activities in the main hall and schoolyard included board games, hand ball, and knock hockey. Back home, we played stickball, card games, put on rag-tag plays, played records, and had marathon Monopoly games. We made scrumptious fudge from My-T-Fine chocolate pudding, jello, stove-top popcorn, and iced tea. Totally unsupervised, no money, and with a gaggle of friends, we were wild and crazy, but we had lots of fun and laughs - the only rules were no cheating in games and straighten up the house and banish the friends before the ETA of my mom getting home. It was a mad dash to make it look somewhat neat - all done in three-minute interval between the click-clack of my mom's heels in the alleyway till she reached the back door.
