Fred -Cops either took the sticks (and probably used themselves in their own neighborhoods since they were not too much older than us) or broke them over their knees or dropped them down the sewer plate {home plate). We avoided all this by positioning younger kids at the corner of E17 and Foster who would alert us to the police before they turned onto the block-then the sticks disappeared under parked cars-up nearby stoops-and into hallways! Once in awhile they would double around...but the supply of stickball bats was endless (LOL)! And you called it-always 1 neighbor who would call the cops on us - even his daughter was mad at him re this.
