in the 50s we played "SCREWBALL" no running bases-in the 217 schoolyard with the chalked strike zone-older guys there used tennis balls as their pitch of choice. "Stickball"was played on a bounce w. spaldeens with running bases on east 17 street between Newkirk and Foster. Even Harry used to stop his evening ice cream truck run to watch the games for a couple of innings! We purchased our clinchers (for our Sunday morning Fast pitch doubleheader leagues at fields like (Leif Erikson (Bay Ridge), ROy H Mann/Lincoln Terrace (Mill Basin League) and finally in Coney Island League at Luna Park/Mark Twain/Vanderveer/Seth Low and others (on hard surface -2 clinchers per game) from Friedmans on Flatbush Ave across from Erasmus.
