I was 7 in 1955 and somehow never knew about the poolroom. I ate at Vesuvius a few times and liked it a lot but could never get pizza there because they never sold individual slices. I would always get pizza slices at DeSica's on Newkirk Plaza. New Toysun Chinese restaurant might have been there in 1955 and that was always my "go-to" Chinese restaurant and the one I judge all others by. That was open until about 1980 when the owner, Leo Lee, changed it to a discount store, which is still there. There was an article in one of the local Brooklyn online papers a few years ago that noted how Leo had been serving the community for 66 years with both stores.
