In the late 1940s, my three sisters and I spent a lot of time staying at my grandma's second-floor apartment which was on the corner of Church Av and East 31 St. (Because our parents were separated, my mom had to work full time.) We slept in one of the two front bedrooms and could see, especially the crackle of sparks coming from the overhead electric wire, and hear the clang-clangs and whining from the trolleys going up and down Church Av at night. If I remember correctly, Manning's Department Store was on the first floor and there was a jewelry store with a diamond neon sign above it across the street.
