The other restaurant that was similar to Charcoal Chef was Hamburger Host, 987 Flatbush Avenue. It was two doors south of the Albemarle Theater. I remember how it seemed sacrilege that the Host charged 50 cents (!) for a hamburger that at other places cost 35 cents. Ate there a number times. Not as hip as the Chef with its many Erasmian customers but good. I recall their buns were nicely toasted.
And, just next door to the Host at 989 Flatbush Avenue was the Pizza Spot. To this day I maintain that it sold the best pizza I ever ate, in Brooklyn or anywhere else. Marie, I know you would agree with me on this! Two slices of their most delicious pizza for 30 cents (in 1960) was a most filling culinary delight. Where's the nearest time machine?
