Ha! All those hi-falutin' neighborhoods were originally in Red Hook, which was not so "elite". To me, though, those areas are more mid-Brooklyn, while Red Hook was on the western side. My mom grew up there. I was always puzzled by those other areas designated as "South Brooklyn" because Coney Island, Bay Ridge, Bensonhurst, Flatlands, etc are actually located in the very south of Brooklyn. Before Brooklyn was incorporated as such and the southern areas were not developed, those areas were south.
As mentioned in my post above, I have a problem with "boutique" names for neighborhoods, because they give the impression of exclusivity and being high class. Growing up in Brooklyn, I remember when, for example, Boerum Hill and Vinegar Hill, among many others, were less than the exclusive areas before they became "gentrified".
