Groundhog Days

My Staten Island backyard lodger, Gertie, a groundhog, has been living and hibernating under my garden shed for several years. She comes out sometime in March, and later on, her pups start venturing out. How apt for these corona days where every day is practically a replay of the prior one, "Groundhog Day". In my neighborhood and woods besides Gertie, I've seen bunnies, possums, muskrats, chipmunks, and about 2 years ago, a six-point stag lived in my backyard for about three months!

Growing up in Brooklyn, the wildlife just consisted of squirrels, mice, an occasional frog and opossum, and mutts. The only variety was birds: sparrows, woodpeckers, robin redbreasts, the occasional chickadee, bluejays, some pigeons, and lots of sparrows. We hunted for bunnies in the area of Marine Park near Avenue U and Flatbush area we knew as the Old Dutch Farm, but no luck. What wildlife did you encounter as a Brooklyn kid.
