Dave is correct. The 14th Brooklyn Regiment was the only Union regiment not bearing a state name. They wore Zuave style uniforms which were a bit of a fad in those days, even internationally. That style uniform featured red pants, thus the name "Red Legged Devils" given to them by Confederates they fought and I believe the name emanated from a Carolina regiment they faced. They are also the only regiment with three battle monuments at Gettysburg.
