The Big Health Scare(s)

With the Corona Virus currently alarming everyone, I recall the big health scare in the late '40s which I think was small pox. I had gotten one vaccination at school which didn't take, then another by a doctor which also didn't take. I finally got one at a police station which did! This memory is very vague as I was quite young. Does anyone have a better recollection?

I also recall the polio epidemic in the early '50s - before the polio vaccine was developed. We were forbidden to go to pools (although there were no city pools in the area at the time and certainly no backyard pools of any kind). There was a wading pool which closed in Marine Park, but our favorite fishing-wading hangout, directly south of the park, called the Creek (now called "Kings Bay", which is part of Gateway) was off limits. I remember several kids who were stricken and crippled for life and those poor kids in the iron lungs.
