There were four generations, on my mother's side, present during Christmas either for dinner or just stopping by years ago - all lived in Brooklyn. A subway or bus ride took all to their destinations (who had a car?). It was a happy time, catching up with relatives at least once a year. And gifts were at a minimum.
Everyone has gone on to faraway places now, and, sadly, I'm "The Last of the Mohicans" still left in New York City. This year I'm heading to the hills (the Poconos, that is) to my daughter's and her family 2 and 3/4 hours away. Presents are a big deal these days. I guess it makes up for tiny families.
