Aaah! The "good" old days weren't so good when we had several heavy-duty snowfalls in the late 50-60s. Because we didn't live the 20 blocks to qualify for a bus pass, we had to trudge the 18-19 blocks to James Madison High - and the boundary for Midwood was right around the corner! The limited school bus service was strictly for the handicapped. There was no law requiring homeowners to shovel their sidewalks, and girls were not allowed to wear pants. (We would remove our leggings once inside.) On two occasions, we managed to get to school after the hour's trek, not on time and soaked to the skin, only to be told, "No school today"! Worse than that news was facing the journey back home.

I remember the kids armed with their shovels earning big money. Where I live today, I would love to see one of them, even paying him the $40 to clear my 60-foot sidewalk, but the kid with a shovel has gone with the wind.
