NY Transit Police

The NY Transit Police, which used to be a separate and distinct law enforcement agency, had its headquarters in downtown Brooklyn. I remember when the Transit Police used to ride "shotgun", on every NYC subway train, and were stationed at every NYC subway station, between the hours of 8PM-4AM. Then, they commanded tremendous respect. When they used to open the doors which led between the subway cars, and walk through the train, everybody looked up, and at night, felt a sign of relief. One time, there was a couple from England on the subway, who had no idea of the presence of the Transit patrolmen, until they saw a Transit cop walk through the train. At that time in London, the British "Bobbies" were not armed, and there was no police presence on the London "Tubes", as they were called. One of them remarked "I didn't know that there were police on the subway". The other stated "He's well armed". The patrols were existent from 1965, when they were authorized by Mayor Wagner, until 1974, when they were unfortunately discontinued, because of financial conditions. The reason that I'm recalling this now, is that I just noticed that there was a story about the history of the transit police, which appeared on the NY Daily News online site. The transit police were eventually absorbed into the NYPD, as was the NYC Housing Police.
