A zoo person and member of the Wildlife Conservation Society, I have also made the "trek" to the Bronx Zoo many times over the years. I do mean "trek", for as a NYC resident, living in the southernmost point of the City in Staten Island (and NY State, too). it is almost a 5 to 6-hour round trip to the zoo via public transit. The kids loved the ferry ride (after the 45-minute SI train), the excitement of the subway, and, of course, the exotic animals and exhibits of the zoo. At the Tiger Mountain theater after the training show was over and most of the audience had exited, a beautiful huge tiger started vigorously licking the plate glass on the other side of which was my three-year old grandson sitting in his stroller! For that visit I drove, taking two bridges, Jersey Tpk, maybe shaving a half hour off the train-ferry-subway ride - a long, harrowing drive.

Incidentally, after making annual visits to the Brooklyn Botanical Garden, I decided to check out the NYC Botanical Gardens which is right next to the zoo. What a disappointment in comparison to the Brooklyn gardens! A late Spring visit is a must - check out the spectacular wisteria arbors and the Spanish bluebells carpet! But the Prospect Park Zoo cannot compare to the Bronx Zoo. It is/was like a glorified petting zoo, upgraded from the dismal, dowdy place of my youth. The restored merry-go-round was marvelous!
