Old Neighborhoods - New Names?

(I thought I posted this last night with the encrypted letters, but it hasn't come through.)

Last night there was an item on TV news about a shooting in "Gowanus" (?) and Hoyt St. Where is that? The Gowanus Canal or the Gowanus Expressway? To me that area was either Red Hook or South Brooklyn, more likely.

Since I was a kid, "The Creek" (south side of Avenue U, between Nostrand Av and E 38th St) has been transformed into Kings Bay.
The "Avenue U docks", south of Flatbush Av, east side down to the Belt Parkway, has now become Kings Plaza and Mill Basin, replacing Burns Brothers Coal and the ramshackle trade mart has. "The Old Dutch Farm". the NYPD motorcycle corps, and Max the Mayor's nightclub on the west side of Flatbush Av, also down to the Belt, is now the Marine Park Golf Course. (I think the NYPD branch is still there.) This whole area south of Avenue U has been completely transformed.
