Funny story, Will. That reminds me of when, in early September, 1964, I returned to Brooklyn after being in Los Angeles for two years. A cousin said to me, "how come ya tawk so fun-ny now?" The Brooklyn accent of family now seemed more pronounced to me.
Simply put, speech is imitative. Now, New Yorkers think I'm a local westerner; however, those raised in the west are better able to discern certain of my voice characteristics that give them suspicion as to my honorable origin.
