Who Knew Shmoo?

I barely remember the white plastic creature, a little plastic blow-up ghost. All the grownups seemed to have great interest and laughs over it. I didn't get the fascination then or now for that matter. Later, I learned the Shmoo was a big fad in the late '40s and early '50s. Somehow I wrongly connected him with Joe Palooka, a comic strip character of the time. No, but he did come from that outlet - only it was Al Capp's "Lil Abner" cartoons. This was a huge craze with merchandising galore - before the one we most remember: Davy Crockett. I think Betty Boop and Kewpie dolls came about in the '20-'30s. There is still Betty Boop memorabilia.
