The book pointed out that the British were impressed with the earthwork and fortifications built rapidly by the entrenched and later retreating colonial forces. An interesting vignette in the book was that a Dutch farmer (most Dutch, surprisingly to me, were Loyalists) took down his weapon and found a British officer doing a recon near his house and shot him and then went home, put his weapon back over the hearth and said, "There, I've done my part." He went back to farming.
