The bumper cars were always one of my favorite rides, and many times there was a meanie as you describe. After I had gotten used to my car, I would try to beat him out so he couldn't crash me. I usually succeeded and would give him the smirk or stick my tongue out (obviously, this was before the "finger") which would just get his goat and the race would be on.
A couple of years ago, I took my grandson to Coney. There are now a couple of mini parks each of which charges separate admissions and, of course, don't include the Wonder Wheel, the Cyclone, - - and the bumper cars!! We went through many rides in one of the parks and paid extra for the Wonder Wheel and the Cyclone. Several hours later, we finally located the bumper cars which were not included in the admission, but had to return to feed the meter. We got back just before the meter ran out, but I got a ticket because my car was not "backed in", angled-parking something I hadn't noticed when I parked. Anyhoo, the bumper cars were all the way on the other side almost to where Steeplechase used to be, and my grandson wanted to go on the Cyclone again which was right down the block from the car. He's now 15 and too old to hang out with Grandma, so I don't know when I'll be going back. Trips withe Grandma to the Bronx Zoo, the Planetarium, Museum of Natural History, the Aquarium, whale-watching, etc are no longer cool.
