I don't know if it still exists, but back then if you walked all the way to the north end of the bridge, keeping to the right and then making a sharp right, there was a narrow dirt path. On it, you could head down a steep embankment to the little beach. To get to the bridge under-beams, we went back up the path to the concrete piling, then very carefully crawled along it and the girders to reach about a 1/3 of the way of the span to clear the beach and shallow waters. I'd say it was at least a 30' drop to the water, and, yes, I made the jump several times.
