Lottie, you're making me very hungry, regarding those delicacies, which you referred to. I remember very distinctly the aroma of those two bakeries on Avenue J, which I referred to earlier. There were always long lines there, as well as by the bakery on Foster Avenue (I forgot the name), especially before holidays. I remember the fresh rye bread and the seeded rolls, which I would buy on Avenue J. As the saying goes, that bread was hot off the oven, and had a wonderful aroma. In addition, we would occasionally buy onion rolls.

In 1960, for my Mother's birthday, my brother and I decided to surprise her with a large ice cream cake, which we bought at either Ratchick's or Stern's. I decided to take my bicycle to the bakery; if I'm not mistaken, I pedaled back home, with either my brother or cousin, holding that birthday cake on the bike. Fortunately, we made it back ok, without dropping the cake. We had enough room, in our refrigerator to fit that cake in, and my Mother was very pleased. It is events such as the above, which leaves me with very pleasant memories of growing up in Brooklyn, N.Y.
