Growing up in Brooklyn was not like growing up anywhere else. We now live in Austin, TX and and prior to that lived for many years in St. Paul, MN, Winston Salem, NC, Fort Campbell, KY and Central New Jersey. The first 21 years of my life were spent in Brooklyn, and it was not like living anywhere else. I have met people from all over the country and world and have found that nobody seems to have the same feeling for where they grew up except those of us from Brooklyn. We know about a dozen or more folks from Brooklyn here in Austin now and every one of them feels the same.

There's a great book I just finished called "It Happened in Brooklyn" an Oral History of Brooklyn in the 1940's, 1950's and 1960's by Myrna Katz Frommer and Harvey Frommer and I think this book nay answer your question.
