So you didn't know anyone who was divorced or gay. I guarantee you were surrounded by them. Brooklyn was no island of homogeneity, regardless of your personal experience. But society back then was horrifically intolerant of anyone who was different or who didn't follow the rules of the church, so people were forced to remain closeted. So you ask where we're going now? Based on your post and what's in the news, I'd say we're going right back to those days of intolerance, ignorance, hatred and pulpit rule.
