Only time we went away for vacation was for a great week at Lake George where we visited Fort William Henry and the Indian Village. Most summers in grammar school were spent at summer school at P.S.222 or P.S.207 where we played knock hockey, board games, and stickball. At home we played ball on the side streets, played canasta, and had Monopoly games that lasted most times for days - half the time spent on arguing with cheaters. In high school, we made the long trip from Marine Park to Riis Park over the Marine Park Bridge by Green Line bus (if we had the quarter - which was never), thumb (hitchhiking), or walking the five-mile expedition (one way no less!). And, in those days there was no sunscreen for us fair-skinned, freckled-faced kids!
