I remember those dog days in Brooklyn - nothing worse! We'd escape to anyplace with air conditioning - Loews, Kennemore, Albemarle theaters, and often just browsing in Macy's. Krasne's didn't have A/C, and grocery shopping was done as soon as they opened in the morning. We lived on the top floor with a black tar roof, so eventually my parents gave in and bought A/C for their bedroom. We would move the TV in there, eat cold salad suppers on their bed, and basically live in there until the heat passed and one could breathe again. My grandparents lived across the street, and their place was a bit cooler, since they were on the 3rd floor, but they got the afternoon sun. Grandma used to put in a cold bath to cool off, or soak our feet in very cold water. Don't have A/C where I live in northern New England now, and with this crazy heat wave I remember Grandma's advice to keep your feet cool so you can sleep at night - it works!
