I LIVED IN CROWN HEIGHTS FROM THE MID 30S TILL 1956 WHEN I GOT MARRIED TO A GIRL FROM ST. JOHNS PL.THE PARADES ON EASTERN PARKWAY WERE SPECTACULAR. TANKS ,CANNONS BEING TOWED,SOLDIERS ,SAILORS AND MARINES. I RECALL SEEING A COUPLE OF VETERANS FROM THE SPANISH AMERICAN WAR. PRESIDENTS ROOSEVELT AND EISENHOWER CAME ALONG THE PARADE ROUTE. WELL MEMORIAL DAY IS NO LONGER CELEBRATED ON THE PARKWAY . THE NEIGHBORHOOD HAS CHANGED AND THE NEW RESIDENTS NOW CELEBRATE WEST INDIAN DAY ON THE PARKWAY. LOTS OF MUSIC AND COLORFUL COSTUMES BUT IT IS BEST TO WATCH THIS PARADE ON TV. IT IS ALWAYS ACCOMPANIED BY VIOLENCE ,STABBINGS AND SHOOTINGS ARE THE NORM.LAST YEAR A YOUNG LAWYER WAS SHOT IN THE HEAD AND KILLED. THIS YEAR THE AUTHORITIES ARE TRYING TO CHANGE THE FORMAT SO THAT THE PARADE WILL BE A DAYTIME EVENT.I`D GIVE A LOT TO BE ABLE TO SEE A PARADE FROM THE 1940S.
