Bob, as a Veteran thanks so much for those kind words. My pre-induction took place at Whitehall Street. Myself and 2 other guys from the neighborhood (plus many others from all over) showed up. One of our 3 was a handicapped individual-the other one a classmate of mine at PS217 had a nervous stomach-he would bail out of a classroom when the subject was Biology. So it was no surprise when they drew blood during the physical that he passed out! I figured then that I would be the "token" from the neighborhood. So a couple of months later I shook hands with my Dad on the steps outside and entered the Induction Center again. I immediately ran into a former baseball teammate of mine -we hung around together all day long, doing paperwork and aptitude tests. At lunch time they gave us chits for a cafeteria around the corner. Upon returning we finished up the processing and at 5 o'clock we left the building in a driving rain to board the buses for Ft. Dix. All around us, people were rushing to the Subways from their office buildings to go HOME-we were going into the ARMY.
