As I remember my Dad explaining it, the area around the Vanderveer Estates (Newkirk and Nostrand) kown as the Farragut Woods as wooded and had artesian wells and was the source of Brooklyn water. He really liked the taste.

The Newkirk Ave IRT subway station had to pump 24 hours a day to keep it from being flooded. I guess it still needs it.

He told me that I was a year old when the Farragut Woods were cleaned out to build the Vanderveers so that is 70 years ago. Now known as Flatbush Gardens. Barbra Streisand and Tina Louise grew up there.
