Anybody as old as I am remember the "Flatbush Water" that used to come out of the tap in Brooklyn in the 1940's. It was loaded with hydrogen sulfide and smelled like rotten eggs. We had to boil it to get rid of the taste and odor before we drank it. I'm not quire sure of the source but think it came from some wells in Brooklyn.
