Years ago my son introduced me to the Patrick O'Brien series called the Aubrey/Maturin novels. There are 20 volumes set in the Napoleonic era which feature a British Naval Officer and an MD. There is one movie starring Russell Crowe (Master and Commander) which was OK but as an old man I still read them in sequence about every 5 years or so. The novels are based on facts - every battle was documented.

O'Brien passed away after completing John Aubrey's career with a promotion to Admiral in volume 20.
