The statue at Grand Army Plaza by the Library is General Henry Warner Slocum who is a little remembered Civil War veteran who served from the the First Bull Run were he was wounded through Gettysburg and Sherman's March to the Sea where he commanded one of Sherman's two divisions.

He was a West Point graduate who became a lawyer and returned to the military when the War began.

after the War he served as a member of the House of Representatives and moved to Brooklyn where he headed the Public Works department. He was engaged in the building of the Brooklyn Bridge and he is on the memorial on the Bridge.
