I know that we've discussed this topic before; however, the trolleys have a very sentimental place in my memory, regarding growing up in Brooklyn, NY. I distinctively remember both the Coney Island Avenue trolley, and the Cortelyou Rd. trackless trolley bus, with its large overhead pantograph. The Coney Island Avenue trolley had a distinctive, pleasant sounding noise. As a kid, I really enjoyed riding that trolley, especially when it went on the overpass, over the Belt Parkway, as well as when it went under the Brighton Beach elevated subway on Brighton Beach Avenue. I remember how it used to turn around at the trolley barn in Coney Island. The trackless trolley bus on Cortelyou Rd., hardly made any noise at all. The last time that I was on an electric trolley was in Toronto in 1979. As far as riding on a trackless electric trolley bus, the last time was probably in 1955 or 1956 in Brooklyn. There are only a few cities left in North America which have either of those trolleys. I remember an incident in 1953, when two school mates became involved in a dispute. One of them grabbed the other's shoe, and threw it on the roof of a passing Coney Island Ave. trolley. I still remember the trolley proceeding south on Coney Island Avenue, with the shoe, still on the roof! What memories do any of you have, of the long ago (but not forgotten) Brooklyn trolleys?
