My earliest memories of the Parkway are of the huge memorial day parades. There were tanks, soldiers ,I even saw veterans of the Spanish American war .At that time whenever the flag passed by, every man would remove his hat and salute, a military salute ,not the hand on the heart. There were mounted troops . The last group was always the dept of sanitation, they would clean up what the horses had deposited. I also saw a few presidents on the parkway. That parade has been replaced by the west indian day parade which has been plagued by violence,3 murders or shootings seem to be the average. When l was 14 l was walking with 2 friends and because it was a holiday l was wearing a suit someone came out of the bright sun ,punched me in the nose and called me a dirty Jew bastard. I`m not even Jewish.I can laugh about it now ,but I chased him for five blocks before I lost him. The kameo movie also showed rooftop films before AC. The Pitkin and the palace were at the other end of the Parkway where Brownsville starts. Dubrows cafeteria was at the corner of Utica Ave. My wedding reception was held upstairs. As a teenager all my pals would meet after taking our dates home and all would lie about how far we had gotten with the girl we had been with. 777 E.Pkway is famous for being the home of the famous Lubavitcher Rabbi, I had painted many homes on that block and the next, but before the chassidim arrived I worked for orthodox jews.At the other end of the P`kway was the Museum ,the library ,prospect park and the grand army plaza. I spent many days and nights on the Pkway, even sleeping on a bench after leaving sorrentos restaurant one night ,with $400. in my pocket. That would not be possible now .Much of brooklyn has been gentrified but crown heights is still a high crime area
