Among good reads based in Brooklyn in the fiction category there's "Pigtown" by William Caunitz. Published in 1995 it's one of many police based novels by Caunitz who was a detective lieutenant for 20 plus years. Caunitz was a Brooklyn native who grew up in Holy Cross Parish (Church Avenue).

For non-fiction "The Brooklyn Nobody Knows" which was published in 2016 is a walking tour book that breaks down Brooklyn to small neighborhoods (44 named and mapped) with very good and current commentary.
