You are thinking of Rico Petrocelli, but as Spencer replied, after only 4 at bats in his first year, he played for the Red Sox 12 more years. He was never the same player after getting hit in the head with a pitch. Probably the best player to have a probable Hall of Fame career ruined by injury was Don Mattingly. After injuring his back, Mattingly lost his power and played a few more years and then prematurely retired. He would have been one of the best.
