many rooms in erasmus hall high school still had desks with holes for ink wells (empty spaces - no bottles) when i was there in the late 60's. those desks had chairs attached too, and opened from the top. my public school was newer, and so our desks just had solid wooden tops. we weren't allowed to use ink pens of any kind until 3rd grade, and then most of us got ball points. but then there was mr. mittye in high school...he would tear up your work (including what were then called "term papers") if you didn't use a fountain pen. remember those plastic barrels full of ink? every time you refilled your pen you got ink all over your fingers and everything else.
