I remember the ink wells being empty but there was always a bottle of ink on the windowsill in case we ran out. You're right about third grade. I couldn't wait to get there so I could leave school with ink stained fingers like the big kids! Those wooden pens must have been a pain to the left handed kids if they had to keep dipping to write. At least the fountain pens would last a while, usually all day.
